SELF DISCOVERY: CREATING HOLIDAYS FROM THE HEART
Holidays bring up a lot of feelings. Some people are thrilled and excited. Others move into experiences of anxiety. I teach self-discovery techniques and am always looking for different ways to create joy. In the last several months, I have had numerous conversations with clients about how this time of year is too commercial and has lost its heart. That is what I want to discuss this month. How do we experience Holidays of the Heart?
What do we all want?
I believe that people are challenged around the holidays because they are not getting what they want. They do not feel seen. They do not feel heard. They do not feel included and respected. They are experiencing “broken hearts.” Every person on this planet wants to feel loved and appreciated. We all want to feel as though we belong and are valued. When that does not happen, we shut down our hearts and our willingness to engage. We move into states of being victims and martyrs. Love cannot penetrate a barricaded heart.
What would it take to create holidays from the heart?
Many years ago I remembered being alone during the holidays. I felt as if my home was empty. I have always been on a path of self-discovery and began to contemplate how I could change my thoughts around this experience. One day, I woke up and thought….”what if others feel this way?” So I reached out to several friends that were single and invited them to my home. The response was amazing. People were so grateful to have a place to go. (The picture here says it all.) This group decorated trees and made my home joyous. We had wonderful potlucks, lots of laughter and great dancing. That tradition went on for a few years, and we created a family of heart. All it took was reaching out and inviting others in.
Tips for creating holidays from the heart.
H – Honor yourself by being honest with your feelings and asking for support.
E – Energize yourself by connecting with people that light you up and inspire you.
A – Activate opening your heart by surrounding yourself with beauty in your home and work life.
R – Recreate this holiday by doing what you love and loving what you do.
T – Trust your intuition and inner knowing. You know what to do to create love and harmony.
Self- discovery is all about looking within and opening to a deeper understanding of who you are and what you desire. This holiday season can be a fantastic experience. Create a holiday from your heart and watch what happens.
