Spring Clearing with Cythia JamesSpring has finally arrived and it’s the perfect time to do some Spring Clearing.  I use the word clearing instead of cleaning because I feel strongly about the fact that clearing something out is about releasing, it does not return. With cleaning, you do over and over again. Do you know people that spring clean every year and it is a huge task? Perhaps that is you!

My clients say that clearing out closets has “always been a challenge.” I also hear “when I lose weight I am going to wear that again” or “I really like this and I am sure it will come back in style.. In reality, they have not lost weight in five years, nor have they worn the outfit for twelve years. These kinds of statements are really about attachment. Buddhists tell us that attachment creates suffering. I say attachment does not leave room for anything new. It clogs up the flow in our lives.

Where are you in your life? Is it time to look at clearing out anything that does not support the vision you have for your life? Is it time to really look at what you have been holding on to? Take an inventory of your clothes, papers and even relationships. This last one may have caught you by surprise; are you holding on to any relationships that do not nurture or support you? Whatever it is maybe it is time to take stock of your life.

EXERCISE:

  • Make a list of the areas in your life (home, work, relationships, etc).
  • Now write in each area, the things that could use some clearing.
  • Circle one thing in each area to work on for 30 days. For instance, clean hall closet, let go of old papers I no longer need, have an honest conversation with someone that I feel is consistently disrespectful.
  • Continue to visualize how you will feel when this is complete. Do a little at a time.
  • Reward yourself when you complete an area; go to a movie, to a spa or enjoy a meal in a nice restaurant.

Now read closely: your mind and place of comfort will start talking to you. It may say “you don’t have time to do this now” or “this task is so overwhelming.” Your mind is trying to keep you hooked. All you have to do is become daring and willing, taking one step at a time.

Whatever you do is something. Every great person starts with vision and then moves forward; each step brings you closer to your goal. Dare to de-clutter and open to infinite possibilities.

Affirmation: Today, I am dedicating myself to clearing my energy field. I am ready to receive.
