The Power of Motherly Love

Mothers Love

During the month of May we celebrate Mother’s Day. It is a time when we honor our biological, adopted and surrogate mothers. It is a time when we remember the incredible and awesome nature of the “mother spirit.” Whether it is in the animal kingdom or the family of human beings, most mothers are fierce protectors of their young. They intuitively know when something is happening with their child. I was always amazed when my mother tuned right into me. This wasn’t always good news for me, but it most certainly reminded me that we were connected in an extraordinary way.

During one of my recent talks I shared that there are three things that “mother love” teaches us:

Out of pain comes creation. There are countless stories of mothers who have lost their children and turned that loss into a noble and powerful mission. MADD – Mothers Against Drunk Driving – is a perfect example. The Irving, Texas–based organization was founded in 1980 by Candice Lightner after her 13-year-old daughter was killed by a drunk driver.

Never take no for an answer. I have seen mothers who have not found the ability to stand up for themselves become powerful voices for their children. They will not “stand down” until they see that justice prevails for their children.

Love holds the high watch. I have counseled many people who are separated from their children. Most of them are apart because of misunderstandings and misjudgments. I am amazed at how many of these people continue to hold the vision that they will come back together. Oftentimes, I am asked to support them in doing their own healing so that space can be created for reconciliation.

I don’t know where you are in your life but I invite you to activate powerful love within you. It doesn’t matter if you are a mother. What is important is that you begin to understand the power of love and how healing it can be in any circumstance. Trust love to create something new out of your pain. Trust love enough to never give up. And trust love enough to hold in your heart the healing of the past.

Please affirm with me: I activate within me a deep and abiding love that transcends all wounds, fears, doubts and unhealed relationships. I open to the possibility that love will always find a way.
